About Us
The Kincardine Brass Band was formed in 2001, following a discussion, by group of players who already played together in other bands, of a desire to create a brass band. A concept not seen in our geographical area since the early 1900’s.
We are a traditional brass band consisting of cornets (not trumpets), Eb horns (not French horns) and Eb and Bb basses (better known as tubas). We are constantly recruiting new members, though we are proud to say that of our average 18 members, 6 of our original members are still playing with us!
The band typically plays 4 or 5 concerts a year, Christmas, spring, and a couple of outdoor concerts in the summer. We play a variety of repertoire from original brass band compositions to transcriptions of classical, sacred and pop music.
Our Conductor
The KBB is conducted by Nancy Ross, a graduate of Western University, and retired music teacher. Nancy would have preferred to play trombone in the emerging band, but at the time, no one else was interested in taking on leadership, so she ended up with the stick. Nancy was brought up listening to recordings of brass bands thanks to her father, a trumpet player and music lover. Nancy’s own music library now far exceeds that of her dad’s thanks to the internet! In addition to extensive listening, Nancy has attended all 7 sessions (and counting) of the North American Brass Band Summer School in Halifax, NS. Keeping her in touch with some of the best brass band players in the UK, and a variety of brass band repertoire.
Kincardine Youth Brass Band
The KBB ran a youth band for 2 years, from 2017-2019. We had an average of 12 student players, one of whom graduated to the full brass band. There are no plans to re-establish the youth band, but any enthusiastic young people interested in joining the band, should contact any member! Our youngest member, at the moment is 13 – our oldest is 80+.
